so, turns out a couple of lads, (truck drivers) at my new firm, are fellow bmw owners, and use a specialist, only about 10 miles from me, that i didn't know existed. popped in there a couple of weeks back, liked what i saw, so taking the car down tomorrow. all to do with the suspension levelling fault that keeps coming up on the dash. they are gonna plug it in to their machine, and see what it throws up, i've heard so many different things that it may be, so hopefully this will point us in the right direction.

sorry to hear about the fault, did you mention it to the garage you bought it from, you only had it a few weeks and if they are any good they should sort it out really! worth a try maybe?
Find out whats wrong first and then take it to them and they can't palm you off with excuses!
Let us know how you get on m8!

It's been in previous posts MT. I haven't looked for them but they may well have disappeared now. Good luck tomorrow, and I am sure you will let us know the outcome

well i'm happy they put the car up on the ramp, and had a good look underneath, then dropped it down and plugged it in to the bmw computer thingy, (oh yeah, i know my sh*t) and its all good. the guy says, everything is coming back clear on the diagnostics computer, not 1 fault he also said, that underneath, everything is solid, nothing needed tightening, and no signs of wear, anywhere he says, beings no faults showing, and i'm happy how it drives, leave it be. he said, they could look into it more, but could take hours and hours to find out whats causing the fault to come up on the dash, and he said, it could be a really daft sensor fault. is it worth spending hundreds on labour, for something like that? i was very happy with their attitude and workmanship/knowledge, so, looks like i've found a decent company to look after the m5 for me. they even measured the ride height whilst there, the front is spot on and the back is 2mm out, which, they say is well with in the tolerance. they said they were impressed, considering the age and mileage of the car. all in all, a good morning, think they looked over the car, just under a hour and a half, and all in, including v.a.t, 58 quid prob get the car in there in a few weeks, for an oils service, and a couple of minor jobs.

That's encouraging Neil, as your judgement is confirmed that it is a good car.
Personally I would want to get to the bottom of the warning light - which is probably a sensor - as keep having it pop up would drive me mad. I would have thought the diagnostic could have been a bit more precise on which sensor is likey to be at fault.

it is very odd, especially, as no fault, what so ever, were showing on the bmw diagnostic computer.
technician, said, if i want, each time i stick the car in for something to be done, they can spend an hour or 2, each time, looking into the fault further, so this will prob be the route i go down.

Maybe a daft question given that you said this is a specialst BMW garage, but is their diagnostic equipement up to much?
I had a 330 before the current M3 and it developed a misfire. I took it to a local garage who told me they had all the diagnostic tools needed. The had the car lots of times and never cured it. They would bring it back to me with no fault showing and the engine running fine, having done sometheing or other to it (changed plugs and all four LAMDA sensors) but within 5 miles the old problem was back. I then saw the diagnostic tool they had and was very unimpresed. They ended up taking it to a proper specialist whose equipement was a lot better and the problem was solved first time round. The original problem probably was a faulty LAMDA sensor but they had installed two of the new ones wrongly which kept the problem alive!!!!!

Could be a intermittent fault which might not show up on a diagnostics unless it was happening at the time it was checked, don't quote me on that though!
Although it was all solid underneath and everything was tight!
Only things i can suggest to is to pop in next time the light comes on and see if they can check it then, your other option is find out what sensors relate to that light coming on and just change them as chances are its the sensor!

£10k sounds like it should be the right piece of kit. Odd that the fault code isn't being stored though.
